South Yorkshire Hub’s updates
Youth Dance Platform for South Yorkshire
On Thursday 26 March South Yorkshire Dance Hub was delighted to hold the 2015 Youth Dance Platform for South Yorkshire at Barnsley Civic, welcoming 13 groups from across South Yorkshire and beyond.
It was a wonderfully energetic and inspiring evening seeing over 150 young dancers from 8+yrs perform pieces from a wide range dance styles and genres, from contemporary to street dance, ballet to classical Indian dance.
“It was such a great opportunity for performers from a variety of backgrounds to come together and celebrate their love of dance, some performing for the very first time”
Charlotte Armitage, Crossing Borders Project Manger
Indian Dance Meets Contemporary Dance
Sheffield-based dance practitioners Lucy Haighton and Nisha Lall have teamed together to run a dance project for young people in the city and surrounding areas.
Tattva (Hindi for Elements) is a fusion of contemporary dance with traditional Indian dance styles. Lucy and Nisha are using their different dance backgrounds and experience to collaborate on this project. The eighteen participants, who are performing the work, have a variety of cultural backgrounds. Some are dancers in training and others have very limited if no dance experience at all.
The project is funded by the South Yorkshire Dance Hub. Rehearsals for Tattva began in early January and the piece premiered as part of Crossing Borders, the South Yorkshire Dance Hub platform at the Civic in Barnsley, on Thu 26 Mar 2015.
Hannah Robertshaw, Yorkshire Dance’s Youth & Community Dance Director, says of the project, “Tattva is a really exciting project for South Yorkshire bringing two local professional artists together with young people to explore a fusion of cultural dance styles. Yorkshire Dance is delighted to support this work through the South Yorkshire Dance Hub. The culmination of this project will be a public performance at Barnsley Civic as part of ‘Crossing Borders’ youth dance showcase and this provides a wonderful opportunity to share the success of this project with a wider audience.”
