James McNicholasUniversity Lecturer
Theatre Practitioner
Researcher / Writer / Speaker

I am currently a University Lecturer in Performance at Sheffield Hallam University, and whilst I predominantly teach acting, I also draw significantly on my past training and experience in dance. I originally began dancing at the late age of 22 (just like Martha Graham, I might add…), whilst studying for a master’s degree in choreography at the University of Leeds.

Since then, I have undertaken further training in contemporary and especially release-based techniques, at centres such as Yorkshire Dance and also Edinburgh Dancebase. One of my most cherished experiences as an understudy was working in the USA under LeVeron Washington, a highly respected choreographer and dance teacher from New York. More recently my work has been focussed on physical theatre, incorporating lyrical choreography.
