Jennifer-Lynn Crawford
Choreographer
Teacher
Practitioner
Currently, I work mainly as a lecturer in release-based technique at Northern School of Contemporary Dance; alongside, I actively seek opportunities to expand and develop my own practice through performance, devising, teaching and writing. I have been collaborating primarily with Charlotte Spencer (and other artists involved in her projects), making and disseminating dance work incorporating sound, visuals and textual/theoretical output. My focus in these projects is performing, although all involved engage with the direction and content of the work.
I am generally interested in process-based work, improvisation, sound/music and any research which locates itself in/through the body and our connection to the natural world. I am less interested in engaging with work based in traditional dance techniques or ideas that tend to objectify moving bodies. I regularly lead technique classes, am comfortable teaching basic contact skills and workshops are generally investigatory – either into particular body-based improvisational scores or experiential anatomy. I practise Astanga yoga daily; Feldenkrais, Alexander and Tai Chi less regularly.
I believe that dancing is a highly physical, and highly intelligent art – but most importantly, it is fun. Primary in this is experiencing the body as sensory and tactile, opening possibilities to give more depth and individuality to physical ideas as they progress.
