Showcasing new works selected to represent dance agencies in Scotland and the north of England.

Dance City presents:
Peter Groom Dance Theatre

What if it’s all or nothing? Created from a scratch performance whilst in residence at Battersea Arts Centre, the piece began as an exploration into working solo. Some of the questions asked were: blood ties, lament, mafia, and say goodbye.

Since its creation at BAC in 2014 , MADRE has toured to Dance City, Dance Base, and will play later this year at TripSpace and Turn, Manchester,

Peter is a choreographer and actor working mainly with dance and theatre. He is currently Associate Choreographic Dance Maker at DanceCity, Newcastle for 2016/17.

Dance Base presents:
Lewis Normand
Passing Flight

What do you take with you from this life into the afterlife, the other world? Which pieces of your story are important to carry and what do you decide to leave behind?

Passing Flight was created through Scottish Ballets Anserinae Project, mentored by Kerry Nichols. With thanks for their support and guidance.

Yorkshire Dance presents:
Crystal Zillwood

An old idea being further developed. This simple solo explores the movement that is inherent in us when seeking rest.

Sleep will be part of a triple bill of work Spirals which will involve the performance of Evolutio and a new piece These Hands.

Spirals will be performed at The Riley Theatre on the Friday 20 January 2017.

Yorkshire Dance presents:
Lydia Cottrell

Atlantis is a one woman space race. It takes the audience on a journey from dance school, through Disneyland and into outer space and asks them to look back and reconsider the planet we inhabit. What did we learn from the race into space? What did we gain in getting there? And can we train for failure?

This evenings performance will be a short extract from the full length work.

Atlantis is supported using public funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England with further support from the North East Artist Development Network, Conway Hall, Yorkshire Dance, Dance City and Live Art Bistro.

Northern Platforms is a joint initiative of five agencies from Scotland and the north of England – Yorkshire Dance, Dance City (Newcastle upon Tyne), Dance Base (Edinburgh), MDI (Liverpool) & Dance Manchester - to increase the visibility of dance artists and companies outside their respective regions.

Friday Firsts was launched in Spring 2011 to showcase new work by independent choreographers and dance companies working on the small scale.  Each evening has its own distinct theme, and will often be the first chance to see performances by the most promising dance makers from Yorkshire and beyond.
