PROTEIN & YORKSHIRE DANCE - LOOKING FOR NON-PROFESSIONALS TO JOIN A DANCE SHOW
Protein and Yorkshire Dance are looking for around a dozen people, male or female, of any shape, size, colour or age over 25 to take part in one of the most breath-taking dance theatre productions of recent times.
No dance experience is necessary at all, although some degree of performance experience is desirable.
Dear Body by Protein is a hilarious and tragically moving satire on the body-image industry. It features six professional Protein dancers and an ensemble cast of amateurs drawn from across the local community. In this story of one woman’s aspirations and nightmares, the non-professionals play a group of ‘patrons’ at a very strange health spa, undergoing a range of increasingly inventive treatments in their quest for the body beautiful.
“The only time I have found contemporary dance funny.”
Brian Eno (yes, Brian Eno!)
Each member of the cast of non-professionals will star in one of two performances, at the Lyceum Theatre, Sheffield (Wed 11 Feb) or the Lawrence Batley Theatre, Huddersfield (Tue 3 Mar) during Protein’s major international tour, rehearsing with Protein for three four-hour sessions.
Auditions (not scary – actually a kind of workshop that’s going to be a lot of fun) will be held on Sun 7 Dec at Yorkshire Dance in Leeds during the afternoon, and at the Lawrence Batley Theatre in the evening. To apply for a place in the auditions, simply download an application form here.
Travel expenses will be paid. The Deadline for applications to reach Yorkshire Dance is Fri 28 Nov 2008.

This is a unique opportunity for artists, arts managers, critics and educators to work with the renowned US based artist Liz Lerman who is visiting Yorkshire especially for this occasion.
Critical Response Process
Pioneered by Liz Lerman, the Critical Response Process is a method for critique that has been widely embraced in theatre, dance and education. Through four steps, the Process facilitates a constructive dialogue about artistic works-in-progress. This workshop will offer vital tools for anyone seeking to nurture talent, appreciate art, or make their own work better.
Choreographic Toolbox
Liz Lerman’s choreographic method emphasizes collaboration with dancers and communities to craft work that addresses non-fiction subject matter. Liz will share some of her methods that can support dance artists in inventing movement, crafting content and getting a creative jumpstart.
Liz Lerman is a choreographer, performer, writer, educator, and speaker. Described by the Washington Post as “the source of an epochal revolution in the scope and purposes of dance art,” her dance/theatre works have been seen throughout the United States and abroad.
Liz has been the recipient of numerous honors, including the American Choreographer Award, the American Jewish Congress “Golda” Award, an honorary doctorate from Williams College, and Washingtonian Magazine’s 1988 Washingtonian of the Year. In 2002 her work was recognized with a MacArthur “Genius Grant” Fellowship.
