Gary Clarke’s COAL hits the road

Gary Clake's COAL - (c) Joe ArmitageWe are excited to announce the première of Gary Clarke’s COAL and proud to have co-commissioned this “emotional, moving and ever-relevant exploration of a community, solidarity and survival” alongside a group of prestigious national promoters (see below).

It is hugely exciting to see how Gary and producer Annabel Dunbar have been able to turn the initial small-scale version of this show (shown at Yorkshire Dance in 2009) into a full middle-scale tour with 7 extraordinary dancers, a local community cast and live brass band.

Marking the 30th anniversary of the end of the 1984/85 British Miner’s strike, this dance theatre piece takes a nostalgic look at the hard hitting realities of life at the coal face.
Strong, powerful and emotive (even the Chair of Yorkshire Dance was moved to tears!), “COAL explores the darker underbelly of the mining industry unearthing the true nature and body wrecking demands of a working class industry now almost forgotten”.
