Bringing together internationally renowned artists and choreographers, Juncture is a pick and mix of innovative artworks, from movement installations in art galleries, to intimate performances, workshops and a karaoke party like Leeds has never seen. Running from Thursday 27 October and with a packed programme across the weekend of 29th-30th October, Juncture will take place at venues across the city including Yorkshire Dance and The Tetley.

Juncture 2016 will celebrate, champion and investigate the practice of creating high quality professional choreography with and by people who are ordinarily not seen or valued on the dancing stage; old people, people of different abilities, body types and backgrounds. Audiences can dip in and out of individual performances, and for those who want to delve deeper and explore the themes of the programme, there are a host of workshops from each of the leading artists. This year the biannual festival produced by Yorkshire Dance is curated by Gillie Kleiman who describes the line up in three words; “cool, bold and uncompromising”.

Dance makers including Swedish artist Sara Lindström, internationally renowned Yorkshire choreographer Lucy Suggate, London-based choreographer Nicola Conibere and ‘independent conceptual dance outfit’ immigrants and animals will be working with 75 members of the public to bring new participants right in to the heart of the festival. Joining them is experimental theatre company Quarantine with Wallflower, Dance Company Fitzgerald & Stapleton (Time Out New York Critics’ Pick) and the performing artist Grace Surman.

Gillie explains her artistic intent for Juncture 2016: “The community dance movement, folk dance, YouTube dance classes and Strictly all tell us the same thing: everybody dances. Departing from here, this edition of Juncture collects together artworks where the role of the professional dancer is given to someone else, bringing artists, participants and their shared work into conversation about what happens when the dancing is handed over.”
