It’s with very great sadness that we share the news that Yorkshire Dance’s friend and colleague, Katie Pearson, has died.
Katie had a secret passion throughout her long and distinguished international career as a contemporary dancer – tap dance.
Feeling that tap was frowned upon in the contemporary dance world, she attended tap classes in secret. In 2003 she launched a community tap dance group for adults, meeting weekly in Barnsley. The group performed in three regional dance showcases run by Yorkshire Dance in 2005, 2007 and 2008, after which Yorkshire Dance invited her to teach a weekly tap class for us in Leeds.
In October 2010, at the age of 31, Katie was diagnosed with cancer but, despite the illness and the side effects of chemotherapy she continued teaching and, in 2011, founded Northern Tap Company.
We remember Katie as a most generous, genuine and talented person with great humour and a unique spark. What she achieved with her class participants and with her emerging Northern Tap Company was extraordinary and wonderful, and gaining recognition nationally.
We know that many of you will share our sorrow at losing her this early in her life, and would join us in sending condolences and best wishes to her family. We celebrate her life, her talent, her achievements and her courage, and we’re grateful for the positive impact she made at Yorkshire Dance.
Katie’s funeral will be held on Thursday 2 April in Barnsley.
