Leeds Inspired funds three new commissions for Juncture 2016

by aprilskipp on April 4, 2016

Yorkshire Dance has been awarded £12,000 by Leeds Inspired to support Participate, a trio of commissions to headline our Juncture festival this October. The three commissions include Nicola Conibere’s Assembly, Sara Lindström’s Dancing On My Own and Lucy Suggate’s Swarm Sculptures.

This year’s festival, curated by Gillie Kleiman, will bring a radical and playful twist to our common understanding and artistic concepts of ‘performer’ by blurring the distinctions between professional and non-professional.

Participate invites the public to re-imagine dance by engaging with the commissions as a performer, a participant or a spectator and to take the same creative risk, together. The selected artists will be working with groups and individuals from across the city. Each artist will work with a mixed group of participants, bringing a diverse experience of performance or dance, from little or none through to regular engager. Through targeted recruitment, Yorkshire Dance will match participants to the artist and the commission that will offer them the most meaningful and rewarding journey.

The individual commissions are distinctive in tone and content yet they share a common quest, ethos and purpose; to take the creative risk of imagining and choreographing everyday human movement, from ordinary people, as extraordinary dance. Participate brings to Leeds a trio of established and emerging artists with roots in Yorkshire and the UK and a European reach and impact.

The grant will also offer the opportunity for three Juncture Dance Fellows  to shadow and support the artists through the making and delivery of the project. The Juncture Fellowship is a period of personal research and dialogue to take place over the course of the festival in October 2016. It is designed to encourage the analysis of work, increase critical awareness, to test drive ideas in short sharings and to provide opportunities for continuing conversations and feedback with Gillie Kleiman and other artists taking part in Juncture.

Yorkshire Dance would like to thank Leeds Inspired for making this possible.
