On Saturday 26 March, over 250 young people aged between 11 and 19, representing twenty youth dance companies from across Yorkshire, performed to full houses at Doncaster’s CAST in Fresh 2016.
Fresh is an annual showcase of youth dance organised by Yorkshire Dance, the Leeds-based dance development agency for the region.
An independent panel of judges was in attendance to decide which two companies would be selected to perform at U.Dance 2016, a national festival of youth dance which takes place in a different city every year.
Momentum Dance, based at Wakefield’s CAPA College, and Leeds-based Phoenix Youth Academy will join youth dance companies chosen at other regional showcases across the UK for U.Dance 2016 at Salford’s The Lowry this July.
Momentum Dance’s Under My Skin takes them to U.Dance for the eighth time. The company, renowned for its energy, athleticism and attack, use the piece to explore the highs and lows of relationships through flowing and fluid group work combined with beautiful partner work.
The U.Dance festival will take place over three nights, bringing together the best youth dance companies from across the country, including the National Youth Dance Company.
The selected groups will have the chance to take part in workshops across a range of styles with leading artists in the industry.
Sarah Lyon, Yorkshire Dance’s Youth & Community Dance Manager, who organised Fresh 2016, says, “We’re delighted that Momentum and Phoenix are going to represent Yorkshire at U.Dance, and we send them both our congratulations and best wishes for their performances in Salford in July.”
“But we also congratulate all the other companies that performed at Fresh. It’s far more than a competition – it’s a real celebration of the amazing talent and hard work of youth dance companies and their teachers across Yorkshire. This region should be very proud indeed of its young people’s achievements in dance.”
