Their story so far…
The ten young choreographers nominated from ten regional youth dance groups met for the first time in March to kickstart their Dance Whispers experience with an introductory day led by Dance Whispers Artistic Director, Joss Arnott.
The group discussed the work of the National Youth Dance Company, focusing on Frame[d], choreographed by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and reflected on what that title meant to them, creating short solos to reflect this. They considered the differences in being a performer and being a choreographer or director and discussed the types of leadership skills which they need to develop when working as the choreographic lead for their own youth dance group.
The introductory day finished with a Q&A from three NYDC Alumni members who discussed their experiences of NYDC. To see what our young people thought of the day, visit their blogs on the Dance Whispers website: https://dancewhispers.wordpress.com/young-choreographers
Following on from the introductory day, the Dance Whispers choreographers visited Sadler’s Wells to take part in a day of workshops, observed rehearsals and meetings with the National Youth Dance Company. They each met their Dance Whispers ‘buddy’ – a member of NYDC, who will support them throughout the project.
Joe Cummins, from Rebuzz in Rotherham, commented “Overall, if I had to describe the day in one word I would say the day was astonishing.” To read about Joe’s full experience of the day visit his blog on the Dance Whispers website.
On April 10 the group visited London to attend the premiere of NYDC’s piece ‘Frame[d]’ at Sadlers Wells. Hannah Robershaw, Youth and Community Dance Director, commented; “…it’s a real privilege to unite young people from Yorkshire with NYDC. Opportunities like this really enable young people to grow their ambitions and step outside of their usual surroundings. It’s such a pleasure to watch the young people in Dance Whispers develop in confidence and artistry.”
