Yorkshire Dance Youth work with Leeds Young Authors on a brand new performance piece

by admin on July 22, 2015

In June and July this year the Yorkshire Dance Youth company were lucky enough to work with some young spoken word artists and poets from Leeds Young Authors.

Yorkshire Dance Youth is a group of young dancers aged 14-19 years old from East Leeds. The company comes together once a week to work with professional artists at our dance studios in Leeds city centre and develop dance skills and create new dance pieces for performance. This term the group has taken the theme of ‘No Bystanders’ as a starting point for their choreography.   This theme came from consultation with the young people about being part of East Leeds FM’s No Bystanders Festival, a festival of live music, dance, spoken word, theatre, discussions and many more, celebrating the young people in our communities that stand up for what they believe in.

Our young dancers and the young writers came together to explore the themes and look at how we perceive difference and what drives us to get involved or stand by. The piece was performed on Friday 3 July at our very own Unusual Connections where it was also filmed.  The youth company were then lucky enough to attend any event at East Leeds FM where they screened the film footage and had the chance to be interviewed as a live broadcast as part of the No Bystanders Festival.

The whole project was an engaging and inspiring opportunity for both the young writers and the young dancers. ‘It was really good to see how the two things came together in the end’ Emily Barber, Yorkshire Dance Youth ‘It’s been lovely’ Anne, Leeds Young Authors.
