Silja Thomsen
I trained at The Northern School of Contemporary Dance, where I gained a BPA (Hons) in Contemporary Dance and a MA in Choreography.
In 2009 I was awarded the NSCD Graduation Prize for outstanding postgraduate student.
I have choreographed for Verve 2010, The touring dance company at NSCD, the piece ‘A Play Of Shadows’ was reviewed by Donald Hutera, who described the piece as “a riveting little duet” and a “fine tense showcase” I addition to this I was also involved in a joint commission choreographing for the NSCD degree students.
Since 2010 I have been involved in the British Imove, New Work project, this includes two high scale site specific dance work collaborations which has been performed by NSCD degree students as well as postgraduate students. In 2011 I was awarded ‘Artist In Residence’ at NSCD for one year; my work included a Dance Film Collaboration with Polish film maker ‘Szymon Szulakiewicz’ which was performed at Leeds Light Night 2011.
In addition to creating choreographic work I has gained experience in teaching by assisting in performance projects for the NSCD students as well as teaching choreography classes and workshops to the degree students.
Currently I am working on a collaborative performance work with Irish composer Garrett Sholdice with whom I have an ongoing working relationship. The final project will be 50 minutes in duration and presented in Dublin’s Project Arts Centre in 2012 as part of a double bill with a new similarly-conceived work by ‘Garretts’ colleague Benedict Schlepper-Connolly featuring solo dancer (former NSCD Graduate) Liv O’Donoghue.
