Unusual Connections is a unique Friday Firsts event that brings together dance forged with unusual themes, unusual partnerships or in unusual circumstances.

From dancing shoppers to dancing families, Unusual Connections will present a range of work including the première performance by Raised, Yorkshire Dance’s integrated performance company for adults with and without disabilities.

We will also screen specially-commissioned films created as part of The Dance WE Made and The Dance Leeds Made by Casson & Friends in January and June 2015.

They feature choreographer and dancer Tim Casson creating new dance works with four Yorkshire Dance artists, and with a range of community groups, based on the stories and movements of unsuspecting passers-by in Trinity Leeds shopping centre.

Tim Casson says “Creating dance is mostly something that is hidden away inside a studio, far away from the audience who will ultimately watch it. By relocating this process to public spaces and by crowdsourcing movement, we create opportunities for anyone to become, not just involved in, but a vital part of the creative process. Sometimes if you see how something is created, you will have a greater appreciation of the finished product – it provides a ‘way in’ for people who have little or no experience of dance. This film offers an insight into the journey that myself and these 40 local people went on to create ‘The Dance LEEDS Made’ over one week in June 2015.”

Another of the films has been created by Hannah Buckley

I made the film as a very quick response considering older women who have influenced me in my personal and creative lives when I was at the beginning of developing a project called Accumulations with 3 other artists. As I consider the importance of intergenerational exchange as part of this project Untitled (Elsie and Hannah) takes on a deeper meaning and importance to me.’
